Garbhini Paricharya · Masanumasika · महीना ९
The ninth month has one purpose, and every instruction serves it: make everything soft. Unctuous enema with oil prepared from sweet-tasting herbs. Yoni pichu — a medicated oil tampon, to soften the birth passage. Rice gruel with generous fat. Daily bathing in cool decoctions of vata-pacifying leaves. Varied grains and cereals.
The heart of month nine: oleation, inside and out.
What to eat
- Rice gruel with good quantity of ghee
- Liquid, unctuous, easily digested preparations
- A variety of grains and cereals (Harita)
What to avoid
- Dry, rough, vata-aggravating food
- Fasting or skipping meals
- Heavy or new foods in the final weeks
Beyond the plate
- Daily bath with cool decoction of vata-pacifying leaves
- Abhyanga continuing, gently
- Rest, softness, quiet — the texts prescribe the mother’s surroundings as carefully as her food
One clinical caution The texts themselves note that anuvasana basti is not for every mother in the ninth month — a body lacking unctuousness must be prepared with fat first. Even the classical authors refused to apply their own regimen blindly. Neither should we.
